PLUCKY musicians can play next to a folk luminary at a workshop in Okehampton later this month being led by Phil Beer, one half of acclaimed duo Show of Hands. Guitarist and mandolin player Phil will be joined by Paul Wilson and Matt Norman of Wren for the Plucked String Day at the Octagon Theatre, at Okehampton College on Saturday, March 25. After daytime workshops with the musicians for players of plucked string instruments, the day will conclude with a concert at 8pm. Devon-born Phil?s multi-instrumental ability has ensured him international status for more than two decades. He first began to play fiddle, guitar and mandolin while still at school in Teignmouth. He played with the Albion Band, touring extensively from 1984 until 1991, when, with Steve Knightley, Show of Hands became his primary musical vehicle. They were voted best live act in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2004. Paul Wilson was a member of 1970s popular folk trio Staverton Bridge. In 1983, he formed Wren Music with Marilyn Tucker, which has continued to promote the development of folk music in schools and communities in Devon and beyond. Matt Norman has developed a unique style on the mandolin and is one of the key figures in the new generation of Devon-based folk artists. From 10am-1pm, there will be a workshop for guitar (Paul) and mandolin (Matt), suitable for all level of musicians from basic skill onwards. The workshop will cover developing technique, skills and understanding plus open tunings for guitars. In the afternoon, Phil will lead a workshop, with Paul and Matt, developing South of England traditional and folk repertoire, ending with a big play. This workshop runs between 2.30pm and 5.30pm.
