Okehampton Ladies? 1 St Austell Seconds 1 OKEHAMPTON Columbines entered this match top of their new league and hopeful of staying there. St Austell ladies showed a different mettle from Okehampton?s earlier matches and this, combined with a slightly less experienced team, created a nerve-wracking match. St Austell dominated at first. But Okehampton soon found more of their stride and were increasingly the attacking side. Despite this they could not quite get the luck or the edge to score. One goal was called as Abi Colton made a fine dash to get her stick to a ball that wandered into goal but had the integrity to agree that she had not touched it within the circle. A fine strike by Claire Smith from a difficult angle passed the goalie but was disallowed. Okehampton had several attacking short corners but could not quite find the pace or the confidence to make them count. Okehampton finally scored when a good cross from Claire Smith, which the opposition thought was safe to go off, was picked up by a determined and swift run by Alex Collins. She picked the ball up at the goalie?s feet and after a fight for the ball got it past the line. Okehampton?s elation did not last long as St Austell scored within minutes, off a short corner striking a fast ball through all the defence. While there was some good passing and breaks through, Okehampton were slightly hesitant and did not make the best of their chances. St Austell remained dangerous until the end. Although play was largely in Okehampton?s hands, there was some relief at the final whistle. l Okehampton have a friendly away against Dawlish this Saturday with their next league match home against Plym Valley Seconds on October 27.
