WITH daunting exams earlier this summer now a distant memory, students returned to Okehampton College last Thursday to collect their A-level results ? with the majority pleased with their grades. Principal Daryll Chapman said the college continued to attain a good results level while expanding its sixth form to encourage more young people to stay on. He said 63% of students achieved all A-C grades, which was in line with the figure last year: ?These results are taking place as we are continuing to increase the number of sixth form students at the college, which is encouraging. ?Hopefully, most of the students are in a position to gain a place at their preferred higher education establishment.? Mr Chapman said a number of subject areas had achieved particularly good results. ?I am incredibly pleased with English, where 15 out of 20 students got either an A or a B; in maths, 14 out of 20 gained an A-C and 60% of historians gained A or B grades. We also had good results in drama and media studies,? he said. At AS level, Mr Chapman noted 100% of candidates in English language obtained A-C grades, while in art, five out of the seven candidates were awarded an A grade. Four students gained a clean sweep of A grades: Megan Valentine, Cally Warman, Alice Wood and Eliza Squire. Eliza from Hatherleigh gained her A grades in history, drama and English literature and interrupted a holiday in Cornwall to pick up her results. She said: ?We have just driven back from St Ives today where we were on holiday, and my results were even better than I expected.? Eliza will now be going to the University of Western England in Bristol to study English and drama. Many of the students were celebrating getting the grades they needed to secure a place at university. One such student was Shelley Pavely, from Okehampton. She said: ?I am really pleased because I have got the right grades to accept my insurance choice which is Swansea University, where I?ll be doing actuary studies with accounting.? Shelley got a B in history and two Cs in maths and English literature. She said: ?I did better than I expected, I had been predicted three Cs. Most people seem to have got the grades they wanted.? For those whose results weren?t as good as they had hoped, staff were on hand to try and help students find alternative courses. John Trenerry, director of sixth form, said: ?It is fantastic. It is really great to see so many happy people. It has been a really good group of students.? Year 12 students taking their AS levels also collected their results last Thursday. Lee Bradfield from Okehampton gained four As in English, maths, law and economics. Lee said he had been ?really surprised? upon opening the results envelope as he had been predicted all Bs. Gemma Williams from Okehampton got three A grades in psychology, biology and maths, including full marks in her statistics paper. She was still awaiting the result from the final piece of course work in one other subject, but may well be on course for another A, having gained the higher mark in the first two parts of the syllabus.
