A THOUSAND young trees have been planted in the grounds of Kelly College in Tavistock, as part of the school's millennium celebrations.
The saplings were professionally planted last month by Silvanus Services Ltd, who will look after them for the next two years while they become well established.
College Bursar Jim Larby said: 'This is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the ecology of the campus and to leave a long-lasting legacy to those who will be here in future years'
The wood has been planted in 50 separate 'clumps' of about 20 trees — there are ten different species, including oak, ash, beech, rowan and holly.
Lt Cdr Larby said individuals can sponsor a tree in the millennium wood.
'When established, each tree will have a permanent label stating the sponsor's name, thus providing a long-lasting reminder of time spent at, or associated with Kelly, and a very personal focus for future visits,' he said.
Tree sponsorship has been set at £5 per tree — a certificate showing the type and position of the tree will be issued to every sponsor.
Head groundsman Dean Elliott said the new wood covers between one and two acres at the rear of Kelly, on land bordering Old Exeter Road.
'It's an area which was going to waste and we decided to do something for the millennium.
'It's going to take between three and five years to establish but it will look lovely later,' he said.
