TAVISTOCK College celebrated its specialist languages status during a packed week of events and competitions.

Languages week involved both students and staff in fun activities and initiatives designed to recognise the significance of learning another language.

Head of languages specialism Anna Mills said: 'Languages week is a terrific opportunity for us to celebrate our specialism and it was a great success.

'Students Kyle Blake, Kerry Watkins and international senator Ed Wilkins spoke to other students about the importance of language learning and how our status as a specialist language college has impacted on them and their learning of modern foreign languages.

'All staff were encouraged to greet students in a foreign language of their choice, with a prize for the most extravagant. Well done to head of drama Nick Lewis who was able to greet his students in Bulgarian and ask them if they wanted to dance.'

Ms Mills thanked catering manager Lyn Roberts and her team for serving up a fantastic variety of international dishes in the college refectory for students to sample.

Designs are coming in fast for a competition to design an international logo for the college, and a primary languages competition was successfully launched.

Primary pupils have been invited to film a video of themselves taking part in a café role play in French or Spanish, with prizes on offer for the best entry.

Sally Bartlett, primary languages co-ordinator, said: 'I'm really looking forward to seeing just how creative and imaginative students can be performing this role play and hopefully such a fun activity will increase their confidence when using another language.'
