TAVISTOCK College students are inviting the local community to join them on a clean up of one of the town's closest beaches.

The Tavistock College Surf Academy, organised by teacher Pete Keegan and learning mentor Dan Kinsman, will travel to Whitsands Bay on Saturday, February 6 to clear litter from the coast.

Mr Keegan said: 'Whitsands Bay is a beautiful spot on the south coast of Cornwall, however, it suffers really badly from marine debris and littering.

'At present the beach's tide-line is a horrible mess with plastic everywhere, which not only spoils the beach for us — its users — but is also very harmful to coastal birds and sea life.

'Without plastic being taken out of the sea and off the beaches it will remain there for hundreds of years until it finally decomposes.'

The college will be driving a minibus full of students down to the beach and Mr Keegan is urging as many people as possible to come along and help out.
