Devon Cup second round
Tavistock Ladies 2
Okehampton Columbines 1
TAVISTOCK knew this was going to be a tough match. It opened with good passing from Okehampton but Kath Collar, Susannah Harland and Steph Mills were quick to intercept any player looking to make an attack.
Babs Horton and Fiona Dunn had a good game in defence, with Dunn making good runs up the pitch then feeding the ball into the D. Becky Hutton battled all through the game and was quick to tackle back when the ball was taken from her.
With both teams evenly matched in speed and ability the game looked as if it was going to be close, going either way at the end.
One of the many strengths Tavistock had was that of their marking up skills when the opposition had any free hits. They struggled to find free players let alone get the ball through due to the strong placement of the Tavistock team.
Sue Cork and Emma Bowden had some good attempts at goal and put pressure on the goalkeeper, which resulted in Bowden scoring the first goal of the match for Tavistock.
Becky Wallace, who played out of position, had some good drives along the base line and was able to feed numerous balls into the D for the forward line of Tavistock.
At half-time, Tavistock knew Okehampton would come out stronger than ever and a goal which one of their players was able to slide past keeper, Rebecca Creasy took the score to 1-1.
Tavistock worked harder with Hutton, Sandra Collar and Harland battling on the left side. Tavistock were putting the opposition under major attacks and Okehampton only managed to break into their 25 yard area a couple of times in the second half.
Becky Wallace only narrowly missed a goal and she and Bowden were major links in feeding the ball in for running players. Tavistock were quick to capitalise on this and Collar shot at goal and slid the ball past the keeper.
For the last ten minutes Tavistock were not under any major threat as it appeared Okehampton could not get back into the game due to strong marking and interception from all the Tavistock team.
Player of the match: The whole Tavistock team.
