THE main Tavistock to Princetown road across Dartmoor was closed on Sunday after a walker had to be airlifted from the moor. The man, who was alone when he was discovered by another walker in the Great Mis Tor area near Princetown, had collapsed in the icy conditions. Rescuers called an ambulance to the scene, but the decision was taken to call in the air ambulance due to the difficult terrain in the area. The main road was closed in both directions while the rescue took place, sparking long tailbacks across the moor. A witness who was involved in the rescue said the man was fortunate to have been found quite by chance ? luckily by a member of the Dartmoor Rescue Group. He said an extremely strong and icy wind was blowing at the time and the man would have been at risk of suffering hypothermia, had he not been found. A police spokesman confirmed the road had been closed for a time but could not say where the casualty was from.
