THE ongoing work to restore a former Baptist Chapel in Buckland Monachorum for use as a building to benefit the whole community has been given a welcome boost by the South Devon Co-operative Group.

Buckland Chapel Trust is the recipients of a £2,000 grant allotted from the superstore chain's community funds — the cash will be used for much needed rendering of the outside south wall and replastering work inside.

Since the trust in 2011 was formed to protect and utilise the historic building members have been fundraising to transform a dilapidated wreck into a real hub of the community.

Five youth groups use the centre and other activities include a mothers and toddler groups, art groups, craft activities, coffee mornings, social events for the elderly and a meeting place for single parent families.

David Stanbury, representing the Co-operative Group's Community Fund, said: 'I am delighted that through the generosity of our members we are able to support this very worthwhile scheme.

'I am impressed with just how much has already been achieved and our £2,000 will help the good work continue.'

Chairman Mark Tailyour said: 'I would like to thank the Co-operative Group for their generous cheque which will help tremendously to us to improve the chapel's facilities for the whole community to enjoy.'
