THE creation of a new car park on Tavistock's Plymouth Road came under the spotlight during a meeting in the town last week. Members of the town council's properties committee heard the town clerk had been approached by the Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club, which is based at the Meadows bowling green. The club wishes to make some improvements in and around the clubhouse and wants to know if the council would allow it to use the old 'disabled' bowls area, not currently used, as a car park. A spokesman for the club said the tennis club was able to park a small number of cars by their clubhouse and bowls club members would like to be able to do the same. Town clerk Roger Howard said he had given the secretary of the bowls club a map of the site which would be taken back to the club for further consideration. Cllr Robin Pike said: 'They'd have to have a ramp down to any car park. Bearing in mind when you go through the archway down to the Rose Walk, there are several steps there. 'They'd have to go down a ramp of at least six feet.' Cllr David Best said he felt the disused area could have far greater potential than merely being used as a car park. 'We should be providing additional facilities in that area,' he said. Wayne Southall, the council's works superintendent, was doubtful about the car park idea. 'I don't think it's very practical whatsoever,' he said. The committee agreed Mr Southall should meet with representatives of the bowls club to discuss the idea further and if necessary, bring suggestions back to a future meeting.
