TAVISTOCK played host to Kentisbeare at the weekend, with the Tavistock flag at half mast and a minute?s silence to remember the victims of tragic events in London. Tavistock won the toss and invited their visitors to bat first on a good track. The Tavistock opening bowlers started off well, especially Gliddon, who is beginning to bowl with real zip. He removed the top three batsmen, supported by Thomas who was bowling with good pace and control. With 15 overs gone and three wickets down for 48 runs skipper McGahey made a double change to the bowling and brought Jeffery and an in-form Milligan to the attack. Both bowlers continued the good work and kept the scores down at the same time. But with 18 overs remaining skipper McGahey reintroduced the opening bowlers to finish off the Kentisbeare innings, which proved to be a great decision as both Gliddon and Thomas picked up where they left off. This time it was Thomas who was the chief destroyer claiming three wickets, with Gliddon picking up one more to make his four wickets haul. This was the highlight of the Tavistock bowling, which was complemented by the fielding and some good catches from Messrs Webber, Rich, Stevens and Kaminski. After tea Tavistock opened their innings with Strawbridge and captain McGahey, who provided a solid start until Strawbridge was trapped lbw for 12. In came Kaminski who looked to get on with it until he was bowled for 7. Stevens then came to the crease and between them Stevens and McGahey began to take the game away from Kentisbeare and provided some great entertainment through the fluency of their stroke-play. This partnership was eventually broken when McGahey was bowled for an elegant 42. Opening bowler Thomas came in at number 5 and with 11 runs to win joined Stevens, and they almost saw it home, but Stevens unfortunately played on on his own stumps and up and coming wicket keeper/batsman Mark Webber came in and had a watching brief as Thomas cover-drove a boundary to clinch the win and a thoroughly deserved 19 points. Man of the match John McGahey. Tavistock now have a cup semi final today (Thursday) and the long journey to Bideford on Saturday.
