WEST Devon planners are to take a look at a site at St Maryhaye in Tavistock where three homes are being proposed in the garden. Twelve letters of objection have been submitted to West Devon Borough Council against the application for 1 St Maryhaye. Mr and Mrs A Knight have applied for outline permission for development which will include six parking spaces, an access drive, turning area and gardens. Concerns have been expressed over the density of the proposal which would equate to 40 dwellings per hectares and that it would change the character of the existing estate, which consists of detached 1970s dwellings with large gardens. Councillors also said there should be a greater awareness of the traffic implications in that area once the major development at The Manor was built across the road. The planning committee was told by architect Graham Barclay this was a low density open space suburban 1970s development which would be considered in today?s climate as an underused piece of land. Government advice sought densities for new homes between 30 and 50 per hectare. Cllr Dick Eberlie claimed it was overdevelopment on a very sensitive site which was on a corner of one of the main routes in and out of Tavistock (Launceston Road) and was key to the whole estate in St Maryhaye.
