Western Counties West
Tavistock 8
Camborne 13
A GOOD crowd who had just attended a charity lunch in the clubhouse saw Tavistock entertained promotion chasing Camborne at Sandy Park on Saturday and give their high-flying guests a shock by pushing them all the way.
In fact Tavistock were in the lead with ten minutes remaining and it looked as though they were going to pull off an improbable victory with their best display of the season.
Having advantage of the strong wind and slope in the first half Tavistock were soon deep in Camborne territory and opened the scoring with a try from full back Richard Goldsby-West.
Tavistock continued to ask all the questions using both forwards and backs to probe for the further score. Tavistock finally extended their lead to eight points when centre Joe Kaminski scored on the left.
With the half time whistle Tavistock were 8-0 up but were thinking that they did not make sufficient use of their first half advantage.
Camborne took the game to Tavistock in the second half but found the home defence in no mood to cave in. Forced to run the ball out of defence, Tavistock used their back row of Jake Phillips, Duncan Law and Tom Friend to good effect and this combined with sound defence kept Tavistock in the game. Camborne eventually reduced the deficit with a penalty from David Mankee.
With barely eight minutes remaining the home supporters were thinking of a well earned victory. However one lapse in concentration at line-out time allowed Camborne scrum half Dave Pascoe to kick through and when the defence made a hash of dealing with the kick Tom Notman Woods grabbed the try to pull Camborne level and Mankee kicked the conversion to secure a barely deserved lead.
From the kick off Tavistock tried to exert some pressure on Camborne in an effort to create a winning score only to fall foul of the referee and concede a penalty kicked by Mankee which secured the victory for the Cornish side.
