THE ladies of Okehampton Golf Club played their club championship. It proved to be an exciting day and a closely fought competition, with Penny Deakin finally coming out on top with the better second 18 holes; she and Marcia Holwill shot a gross 166, with Dawn Phillott coming third with 172. The net champion was Rachel Spry who scored a net 144, second was Penny Deakin also 144 and third was Jane Warren with 148. The 18 hole competition was also decided on the back 9 with Kay King winning with net 71, second Sally Griffin also 71 and third was Maureen Willcocks net 73. On Saturday the men played their annual Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy; this has been played at the club for many years and for the last 30 Chris Hurley has been unable to enter because he was working for the company. This year he was able to enter and played a wonderful round of golf to win the Scratch trophy with a gross 71. Division one was won by David Keir gross 75 net 63; 2, John Ripley 77, 64; 3, Kevin Perryman 76, 65. Division two was Graham Milford gross 77 net 61; 2, Alan Hough 77, 63; 3, Stuart Lewis, 81, 64. Division three saw Paul Ayres winning the Cheltenham and Gloucester Handicap Trophy with a gross 86 net 60; 2, Lee Pengelly 88, 63 on the back nine from Phil Hawking 91, 63. Vice captain Allen Deakin led another mixed team to victory on Sunday away at Yelverton; he and wife Penny giving four shots gave the team a good start with a 3-2 win. Lady captain Eileen Piper and husband Ray receiving 11 shots lost on the last hole. Lin and Nick Atkinson playing all square finished all square; Maureen and Brian Willcocks lost on the 18th. Kath Mansell and Sam Hurdwell won their match 3-2 then Cherry and George James three down on the 14th came back to win on the last hole.
