ON a windy day on Sunday, Roger Downing won a close fought battle to secure the 2003 EGU medal at Hurdwick Golf Club.

He finished with a net 67 but only secured his victory on countback over John Berry, who also carded a 67.

In third place was Tim Hawkins with a net 69 and the only ?Two? of the day went to Ray Spear, who missed a hole in one by a small margin.

The leading lady was Audrey Pugh with a net 71.

In the midweek stableford, the club captain, Rodney Browne, led the field home with 37 points. Again, it was a tight finish as Derek Blackmore also had 37 points but lost out on back nine countback.

In third place was Tim Gale with 35 points and none of the competitors managed to win the ?Twos? sweep.

Hurdwick ladies? and men?s foursomes pairs have been in action over the past week in the Daily Mail foursomes and produced exciting matches. Unfortunately, they were defeated in both thrillers.

The ladies? pair of Val Raine and Sally Arscott took on Tavistock, away and lost on the 18th hole.

The men?s pair of Kevin Pugh and Tim Hawkins were also drawn away at Teign Valley and went one better than the ladies by taking their opponents to the 19th hole.
