TWO youth workers in Callington have had their temporary contracts extended until June to provide time to find a more permanent solution, following the intervention of the town's Mebyon Kernow Cornwall Councillor Andrew Long.

At a recent Cornwall Council meeting, he asked why it was that both of the town's workers had temporary contracts, one of which was due to end three days after the meeting, and neither of them had received any notification of what the future held.

Cllr Long said: 'I was astounded when I heard that their contracts had not been renewed, extended or made permanent. Even worse was to follow when I heard that one of them effectively finished in a couple of days and they had not been told what was happening after that.

'This was unacceptable so I contacted the portfolio holder, Cllr Neil Burden, as did the town council, to ask for immediate action, and 48 hours later we have at least a temporary solution.

'Thanks to the intervention of Cllr Burden, both the contracts have now been extended until June 2 and I will be continuing to press for a permanent solution to ensure that the hard work of these two and the staff of the youth centre in Callington is continued.'

Cllr Long will be asking for a meeting with the head of the service in the coming weeks.
