KNIGHTSTONE Tearooms at Yelverton is hosting a RAF Harrowbeer Archive/Memorabilia Weekend on August, 28, 29 and 30 from 11am to 5.30pm each day.
The event is to make visitors and locals aware of what went on during the 1940s on a stretch of moorland close to Yelverton — the village was split in half, buildings demolished and roads repositioned to make way for a second world war RAF fighter station.
On Sunday August 29 there is an MG Car Club 70th anniversary Battle of Britain memorial car run, leaving Knightstone from 9.30am.
There will be about 40 vintage and classic cars of all makes from 1919 to 1980. They will return to Knightstone at approximately 3.30pm.
Displays include a Spitfire exhibition and memorabilia; a diorama of the airfield as it would have been in 1943; a copy of the station operation record book from when Harrowbeer was officially opened to the day it closed and copies of some of the squadron's operational record books and numerous photographs; a Dart engine and military vehicles.
On site is a small museum containing artefacts, documents of the period and RAF uniforms.
A small stall will sell aircraft models, games and toys books and other airfield related items.
There will also be exhibits by the South West Aviation Heritage Group and the Harrowbeer Interest Group, who will be giving guided walks throughout the weekend from 1pm to 4pm.
There is no admission charge and parking is plentiful. For further information contact organiser Michael Hayes on 01822 853679.
