A NEW group — the Friends of St Eustachius — has been established to help maintain Tavistock's 600 year old church.

Membership secretary Jennie Dobson said: 'Saint Eustachius, Tavistock, has echoed to the sound of Christian worship since the 14th century.

'Throughout this rich and eventful span of time, many have grown to love the church's atmosphere of peace and sanctity.'

She said the building means different things to different people.

'For the congregation it is a place they attend regularly for services of worship and social events.

'Some have moved away to far flung corners of the globe — but would like to remain in contact,' she said.

'It is an historic attraction for tourists and a place others may visit only once or twice for weddings, baptisms and funerals. The local schools and other organisations use the church for concerts and special services.'

Mr Dobson said businesses recognise the church is an integral part of the town.

'It is a landmark and focus for Tavistock and, as such, contributes to the income of the area.'

She said the Friends had been established to help maintain, preserve and beautify this great church and to act as a focal point.

'In becoming a "friend", people can acknowledge our church, not only for its architectural, historical and theological significance, but also for the important place it holds in the hearts and minds of all who pass through its ancient doors,' she said.

'Saint Eustachius is a timeless symbol of the beautiful town of Tavistock — the Friends aim to keep it that way.'

The launch will take place in Tavistock Town Hall on Saturday April 7 at 6pm.

There will be entertainment from the Stannary Brass Band and the Saint Eustachius Choir.

There will be a glass of wine and a bite to eat as well as information about joining the Friends.

Everyone is welcome, but asked to contact Mrs Dobson on 01822 616673 so she can arrange catering.
