KELLY College Choral Society will be breaking new ground with the programme for their next concert on Saturday.

The society will be performing two works never before sung by the choir, Schubert's Deutsche Messe and Andrew Wilson's Second Mass setting, his annunciation Mass Opus 150, specially written for the society in order to celebrate his 20th anniversary as the Kelly Choral Society's musical director.

When the society decided to perform the Schubert Mass — with the unusual orchestration of oboes, clarinets, horns, bassoons and organ — Andrew Wilson, head of music at Kelly College, decided to compose his own Mass for the same forces. The title of the mass coincides with the celebration of Annunciation, which this year is on March 24, the concert date.

Andrew reflects the events of the story of the Annunciation in his work, with the focus deliberately drawn towards the angelic parts of the text in the Gloria in Excelsis and the Sanctus.

The Schubert Mass is really a set of eight choral songs, rather than a traditional mass setting, dating from towards the end of the composer's short life; composed in 1826. The music is consistently simple and dignified in style, featuring beautiful haunting melodies and has become a favourite with many choirs throughout the Christian world.

The concert takes place at St Eustachius' Church, Tavistock at 7.30pm.

Tickets, £8 for adults and £5 for under 18s, are available from Book Stop.
