OKEHAMPTON-based gospel choir 'Soul Attitude' performed four beautifully harmonised songs to open the first night of the London Community Gospel Choir British Tour at Cheltenham Town Hall recently, writes Rowena Bowyer.

The LCGC invitation came after a series of workshops in Okehampton and a 'Soul Attitude' visit to the choir's base in London's Islington.

The Okehampton singers repaid this privilege with an effervescent and professional performance, which had the audience responding with abandon.

Many thanks must go to LCGC, an internationally acclaimed choir, for their warm and friendly generosity in providing such an opportunity, which even extended to performing a joint rendition of 'Jesus is Real' under the lead of Betsy Waters and soloist Gemma Collier ('Soul Attitude' members.) It is hoped LCGC will include a South West venue in its next tour.

'Soul Attitude' was formed about five years ago by, a then, Okehampton College student Bola Ogun and is now led by Jon Bint, who duetted with Janet Lanchberry in a moving version of 'No Salvation.'

Community youth worker Alan King has worked tirelessly to secure venues and obtain funding for the choir, as well as supporting the group at its increasing and diverse gigs.

Choir members, with the help of the community, have been busy fundraising —shaved heads, discus throwing, cream teas— to enable the group to gain in experience and expertise, including participation at various arts festivals around the country.

The choir has already performed at the National Youth Arts Festival at Ilfracombe and is hoping to take part in a London Gospel Festival in February, for which they are composing their own gospel song.

Okehampton's community youth arts organisation 'Fusion' can be very proud of these enthusiastic youngsters, who have grown from local to national status.
