CHIMES from the town clock will be heard once again in Tavistock now the town council has agreed to pay the repair costs of more than £1,000. The 'strike' and 'quarters' mechanism was broken, the council's properties committee was told this week, and the chimes were very sporadic. A report by the council's clock maintainers said the cost of the repair at St Eustachius Church would be £1,088.

Cllr Ted Sherrell said the cost was high but it was a very old church and clock: 'If there are chimes there, let's have them and also can we make sure that the clock keeps time. I am never quite sure of the time on that clock, I always have to double check.'

It was agreed that the clock should be restored to its former glory.
