PRINCETOWN Primary School has been awarded £5,000 thanks to the pupils? creative designs for the school?s playground. The Woolworths Kids First Playground Partnerships scheme presented the school with the award in October ? after the children beat off stiff competition for the award from schools in the South West, Wales and Southern Ireland. Members of Class 1 undertook the task of re-designing the school playground, and with little adult input the children put together a survey canvassing the opinion of fellow pupils regarding changes and improvements they would like to see. Then year 5 and 6 set about researching suitable play equipment, resources and material costs. They considered health and safety, scale and suitability within the project. When the award was received the school had within one year to complete the playground of the children?s choice. One of the judges said: ?Winning applications were very clearly child-led ? they conveyed the enthusiasm and involvement of the children and their final plans reflected the children?s wishes.'
