PRINCETOWN Primary School pupils will be helping to create a unique quilt as part of a scheme to mark the Olympic and Paralympic Games, being held in the UK in 2012.

Quilt maker Jacqueline Welby from Widecombe-in-the-Moor tasked the pupils to produce artwork of their homes so she can incorporate them into the panels of her quilt.

The quilt will be one of 500 to be produced nationwide as part of the project, A Gift of Quilts-2012, and each one will be given to countries taking part in both the Olympic and Paralympic events.

The Quilters' Guild of the British Isles is co-ordinating the scheme with the support of former Olympic gold medallist Sebastian Coe, now chairman of the organising committee of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games 2012.

Jacqueline, a resident artist at the Duchy Square Centre for Creativity in Princetown, will replicate the pupils drawings of their homes in stitching on the quilt.

She said: 'Rather than just make an ordinary patterned quilt, I want to produce something that highlights Princetown, so we can raise the village's profile nationally.

'I thought it would be nice to involve the pupils so the final quilt will be seen as a real community effort and every one of the children's drawings can be featured on it.'

In the scheme, anyone of any age or skill can get involved in making a quilt of any size after registering with the organisers.

The idea is that the quilts will be a unique sign of friendship and peace at the time of the games and organisers are planning to stage an exhibition of the finished quilts prior to the Olympics, as well as producing a book and DVD about the project.
