MORE than 160 children visited Tavistock's Meadows recently to take part in a Teddy Bears' Picnic.

The picnic was hosted by Tavistock Area Children's Centre and the children brought their teddies and almost 100 grown-ups to help them look for the children's centre teddies who were concealed in the park.

The families, including parents, grandparents and childminders, enjoyed the sunny weather and joined in with parachute games, singing, hoola hoops and other activities.

Maggie Calvert, children's centre play leader, said: 'The park was over-run with children — we were not expecting that many. We were really pleased with the response. It was a lovely day out for everyone.'

The children's centre, which is part of the Government's national Sure Start initiative, is planning similar events in the summer, both in Tavistock and surrounding villages.

This will include the Big Toddle, a sponsored walk around the park which raises funds for the centre and the national charity Barnardo's, who manage the centre, will take place on June 30.

There is a fancy dress theme of 'animals' and anyone with a child aged five or under is invited to join them. For more information contact the centre on 0§1822 614210 or email [email protected]">[email protected]
