A RECORD-breaking £7,000 for the Exeter Leukaemia Fund was raised at the fourth annual Neal Cousins Memorial Day which attracted the crowds to Okehampton's Simmons Park on Sunday.
The event, which drew more than 500 people, was boosted by an auction which included numerous sporting items and a helicopter ride donated by television personality Noel Edmonds which went for £810 to Clive Butt from Hatherleigh.
The auction alone raised more than £3,000 but the highlight of the day as always was the highly anticipated football match between Okehampton's football and rugby clubs, which was won by the former 7-4.
One of the organisers, Andrew Luxton, said it was a brilliant day and a fantastic amount was raised for charity, beating previous totals by at least £1,000.
The day is both to remember one of the town's young sporting stars Neal Cousins, who died of leukaemia at the age of 23, and to raise money for the cancer charity.
To date, more than £20,000 has been raised.
The day was rounded off with a disco in the marquee with entertainment by local band Well-Oiled.
