a cheque for £407.31 was last Thursday presented to Plymouth and West Devon Talking Newspaper for the Blind by Stephen Trahair, musical director of the South West Chamber Choir.

Also present was Gill Smith, choir secretary, and a reader for the Talking Newspaper.

The money was raised from a concert of sacred music by the choir at St Eustachius Church, Tavistock, in April.

The concert programme ranged from early music through to modern works by local composers.

Mr Trahair said: 'We were very pleased to be able to support the Talking Newspaper in this way, and are grateful for their help in promoting the event, which attracted a large and enthusiastic audience.'

The Talking Newspaper presents a weekly summary of local news on CDs that are distributed free of charge to about 200 blind and visually impaired listeners in Plymouth, West Devon and East Cornwall.

The charity is entirely funded by public donations and is run by volunteers.

Chairman the Rev Michael Ridley said: 'The concert was a great success, and we sincerely thank the South West Chamber Choir for their kind and generous support.

'We are also very grateful to the Tavistock, Okehampton and East Cornwall Times, the Plymouth Herald and the Western Morning News for permission to record items from their newspapers.'
