THE opening of a specialist games and computers shop in Tavistock has been hailed by the chamber of commerce as evidence that there is confidence in the town, despite the recession.
Games and Computers, in Market Street, is the brainchild of three local businessmen who spotted a gap in the market for a one-stop shop for computer games and computer services.
The chamber of commerce has welcomed the arrival of the store, saying it will bring a much needed economic boost to the town.
Nigel Eadie, chair of the chamber, said: 'I'm delighted that we're seeing more investment in Tavistock. It demonstrates the confidence we have in the town making a full recovery from the recession.
'Games and Computers will fill a gap in the market which will help Tavistock to improve its offer, drawing visitors to our high street and providing a much needed boost in the run up to Christmas.'
The home entertainment store's items include electronic games and consoles, board games, fantasy games and historical war games.
Matthew Henry, a former pupil of Kelly College, has been recruited as an IT technician.
Robert Oxborough, director of PCC Office Supplies and one of those behind the store, said: 'We're delighted to get the first customers through the doors, despite the bad weather on Saturday and we've already had some really positive feedback.
'It's exciting to launch a new business at a time when there is so much doom and gloom in the media about business prospects, especially one which is genuinely needed in Tavistock, and that's been reflected by our successful opening weekend.'
