Second Battery Kolts 2

THIS was an enjoyable game of football played in good spirit by two teams with contrasting styles. Kolts pressed from the outset, passing well and always looking to use the wings, but the Tavistock defence was not easily broken down and despite being asked lots of questions down the left hand side, defender Nick Cunningham seemed to have all the answers.

Tavistock's direct battling style created plenty of openings, and they took the lead midway through the first half, when Ethan Edwards was on hand to finish neatly with a crisply driven shot.

Kolts struck back ten minutes later when the right winger cut in side and lofted the ball over the keeper from the edge of the box. However, the half finished on a high for Tavistock when on the stroke of half time Alex Mayne's ran at the Kolts defence who backed off, leaving Mayne with the time and space to unleash a thunderbolt.

The second half was entertaining, with chances for both sides, but it was Kolts who grabbed the equaliser following a long throw into the six yard box, and in the goalmouth melee that ensued, Kolts scrambled the ball over the line. Tavistock had chances to nick all the points in the dying minutes, as Ian Harvey met Matt Havron's scissor kick cross well, but failed to keep his header down, while Pavel Drobek's 30 yard drive just cleared the crossbar.

Tregorrick Park 2

Tavistock Town 2

ON a tight pitch Tregorrick had the bulk of possession as Tavistock were slow in everything they did. Despite this Tregorrick did not create too much in the way of chances, although a smart one handed save by Holland in the Tavistock goal kept the scores level.

As the first half wore on Tavistock did come more into the game and Hicks was proving to be a handful for the home defence. Five minutes before half time Tavistock forced a corner which Tregorrick failed to deal with and Northmore was on hand to give Tavistock the half time lead they hardly deserved.

The half time break gave Tavistock the chance to review their perfomance and brought a resolve to improve in the second half. Tavistock did start brighter but Tregorrick drew level when poor marking from a corner allowed an easy chance to be converted. Despite this set back Tavistock were now starting to pose Tregorrick problems largley through Hicks, Hancock, Northmore and Lane. Midway through the half Hicks outpaced the Tregorrick defence and produced a fine finish to give Tavistock the lead.

With ten minutes to go it looked like Tavistock might take the points but when Lane seemed to be fouled when in possession play was allowed to carry on and a defelected shot gave Tregorrick the equaliser. Tavistock could be satisfied with a better second half performance.

Marine Academy 5

Tavistock Town  2

AFTER winning the middle league last season  the boys face a tough season playing in the top league.

Town opened their season with an encouraging display against last years runners up Marine Academy Juniors; although Town lost 5-2 they managed to keep possession it could have been closer. Charlie Barriball opened the scoring for Town early on but with Town trailing 2-1 at half-time they had it all to do in the second period.

The second half saw town go 3-1 down early on, Nathan Dodd pulled one back for Town putting them back in the game at 3-2. Joint players of the match for some superb defensive work and battling went to Bert Rodgers and Cameron Heard.

Although keeper Ryan Smith made some great saves and Tom McMahon saved one off the line Town conceded two more goals in the last 15 minutes making the final score 5-2.

Town U13s give a big thank you to Andy and Katherine Williams of Willy's Ice cream on Dartmoor for their sponsorship towards new kit.

Plymouth Colts 7

Tavistock Thistles  1

DESPITE the scoreline Tavistock Thistles can take a lot of credit for their performance in this match. Thistles started the match with eight players, although two more joined later. Thistles played well, and gave their all, but didn't necessarily have the luck they deserved, conceding one goal which was a ricocheted own goal from a corner and another from a long punt downfield which bounced over the keeper.

However, Plymouth Colts were the better team on the day but with a full complement of players scores should be closer. Despite the odds Thistles heads didn't drop, and they were rewarded with a well taken goal scored by Kyle Newman Marks.
