AN urgent call for a traffic flow census in Tavistock's Whitchurch Road and Anderton Lane was issued at this week's meeting of West Devon partnership committee.
Cllr David Stapleton, ward member for Tavistock, told Monday's meeting that statistics provided so far by highways officials were unsatisfactory.
He said the controversial Whitchurch rural gateway had had severe knock-on effects for Anderton Lane.
Cllr Stapleton said: 'A lot of traffic is now pouring down this lane and it's compounding the problem. It's not just the gateway — there's a strategic problem here that does have to be resolved.
'I am not satisfied. The statistics are not viable and Anderton Lane has been completely discounted.'
A motion requesting officers to restore two-way working to the single track rural gateway, due to be put by Cllr Roger Mathew, was postponed.
Cllr Mathew, who last week told the Times he would carry on the fight to scrap the gateway, said: 'I didn't feel it was the right time to achieve the maximum benefit from that meeting.
'It's better to wait longer and get a better result than to ram something through grudgingly by just one vote.'
He hoped a meeting to be held between the borough, the county's environment director and executive member on July 29 would prove a positive way forward.
The rural gateway formed part of a £26,000 package of traffic calming measures in Whitchurch Road, including an 'urban gateway' at the Tavistock end of the road, plus a 20mph speed limit by Whitchurch School.
Re-modelling works were recently carried out to improve visibility in the rural gateway, following a long battle by campaigners who claimed it was dangerous.
A borough council call to the county council to restore two-way working was passed to the partnership committee earlier this year.
