CUBS and scouts from Bere Alston, Buckland, Horrabridge, Tavistock, the Walkham Valley and Whitchurch have celebrated the Queen's historic visit to the the West Country with a fun-packed Golden Jubilee camp recently.

Around 190 youngsters and adults settled into their camp site at Calisham Cross near Yelverton — and with more than 20 activities organised, assistant district commissioner Sandra Johnson said 'busy, busy, busy' was the theme of the day.

Sandra said the Saturday night had been planned as a peaceful time but a tug of war and karaoke kept the excitement going until fatigue finally set in.

'Come 10pm quiet reigned — with some very exhausted people actually asking to go to bed!' said Sandra.

The following day saw the scouts and cubs enjoying a street party style lunch, complete with flags and bunting, set in the field.

Unfortunately the rain arrived at the same time as 40 beaver scouts who came to join a sports afternoon, forcing the sports to take place under canvas.

The rain departed, enabling the evening barbeque to take place and the youngsters took part in a blindfold trail into the woods and lit the camp fire.

Sandra said despite the afternoon's rain, it appeared the youngsters had not seen enough water for one day and took revenge on various camp leaders.

'They call it a camp fire skit so they get away with it!

'Monday saw many tired but happy people packing up at the end of a very happy and successful celebration of our Queen's jubilee,' said Sandra.
