TAVISTOCK Physically Challenged Group is celebrating its independence.
Formerly called the Tuesday Group, the club now has its own charity number and has managed to raise £3,000 to cover its running costs for the first year.
The group was previously funded by the Leonard Cheshire Foundation and social services, but Leonard Cheshire reluctantly had to pull out, leaving them to find a way to support themselves.
Mary Worth, treasurer for the group, said they were extremely grateful to Bryn Dando, who was instrumental in helping them get charity status. 'Without his help we would still be struggling', she said.
Jan Simpson and Julia Easton of Tavistock and District CVS also came in for praise for their patience and helpfulness.
Financial backing has come from Tavistock Lions Club, Whitchurch and District Nursing Association, HMP Dartmoor, Tavistock Inner Wheel, Tavistock Rotary Club and Lloyds TSB Foundation, and Mary Worth expressed her thanks to them and members of the public for their support, which has enabled them to keep going.
The 25 members, who have a wide range of disabilities including arthritis, amputations, multiple sclerosis and sight impairment, meet fortnightly and for some it is their only chance to get out and mingle with people.
They go to film shows, talks and meals and have ten helpers, who are vital to the success of the cub.
The next meeting is at the Alexander Centre on Tuesday.
