A WIDE-ranging array of important projects and activities was highlighted at the annual meeting of the Dartmoor Society, held at Clearbrook last Saturday.
The society was marking its five year anniversary at the meeting ? Dr Tom Greeves, chairman, said the society was as much needed now as when it was inaugurated, providing a positive and fresh influence on the thinking and decision making on Dartmoor.
Dr Greeves said: ?I believe we have already made a significant contribution and we look forward to building on our achievements in the next five years.
?Dartmoor remains at risk from insensitive and sometimes ignorant external pressures, especially those reflecting an urban viewpoint.
?Our independent status and well-informed opinion ensures a degree of respect ? new members are always welcome.?
Among the many innovative ideas introduced by the society have been annual public debates on subjects of topical interest, like the introduction of the 40mph speed limit, renewable energy and conservation of historic buildings on Dartmoor.
The society has initiated an annual awards scheme which recognises the work of people who have made significant contributions to Dartmoor. Winners have included the Wren Trust and Dartmoor Rescue Group veteran Fred Barlow.
The society has also taken a campaigning role in several instances. Achievements include persuading Dartmoor National Park Authority that the iron store at Burrator was of historic interest and providing crucial evidence in support of the listing of Burrator Lodge and dam. The society also supported campaigners against the ?rural gateway? on the Whitchurch Road near Tavistock.
Dr Greeves said the society intends to continue its work towards safeguarding the well-being of Dartmoor?s communities, meeting with a wide range of agencies and celebrating Dartmoor and its culture.
The meeting also heard from Maureen Crosbie, who spoke about her educational work at Dartmoor Prison.
