VANDALISM and theft involving new conical-shaped plastic flower displays in Tavistock?s Bedford Square has led to renewed calls for CCTV to be installed. The first incident happened just after midnight on Sunday, when more than 60 plants were uprooted and thrown around. A few days later, on Wednesday between 2.30am and 3am, 150 plants were stolen ? they were carefully dug up and removed, together with the soil around the roots. A vehicle would have been needed to take away the plants, said police ? they appealed for witnesses to either incident to contact Tavistock police station. The crime reference number is JT/07/1066. Nigel Eadie, chairman of the chamber of commerce, who raised the money to provide the flower displays, said: ?I am very disappointed. People have put in so much effort raising money to get it going. ?We are working to make the town look special during the summer. What needs to happen is CCTV coverage in Bedford Square.? Mr Eadie said the police had been asking for CCTV for some time, but although the town council had considered it, no decision had been made. ?It wasn?t just vandalism, it was theft as well. We need to take urgent steps and find some way to control what goes on there late at night,? he said. It had been suggested the displays should be taken in at night, but Mr Eadie said adopting a ?seige mentality? was ?not on?. ?We have a right to have the town look pretty and be protected,? he said. The displays were replanted on Thursday morning, and Mr Eadie estimated the cost as £450 for the replacement plants, plus £100 for replanting. One of the units had also been toppled over. ?If they are vandalised again we will do it again,? Mr Eadie said. The chamber is meeting the council on Thursday to discuss the installation of CCTV and Mr Eadie said local businesses were in favour of the proposal. ?About 50% of towns the same size as Tavistock already have CCTV. I hope our town council will be equally as progressive,? Mr Eadie said. He stressed the police had been ?absolutely superb? and had helped them look at options to ensure the units were not vandalised in the future.
