VOLUNTEERS are needed to continue the work of Callington and Saltash CATS, an active local charity that aims to support and reward young people making a difference in their local communities.

CATS (Community Action Through Sport) is looking to recruit steering group members or officers to further develop and shape its exciting work in this area, which includes the Friday Night Project with a drop in café, entertainment and events for young people aged 14 to 19 in Callington Town Hall, and lots of volunteering opportunities.

The group meets once every two months, either in Callington or Saltash, and partners include the Youth Service, Callington and Saltash secondary schools, the police and both town councils. An annual awards ceremony recognises the important contribution young people make to their communities.

CATS chairman PC Julian Collison, who is based at Callington, said: 'I have been involved with the Saltash and Callington CATS for over four years now and have been the chair of the branch steering group for the last 12 months.

'In this time I have seen the level of anti-social behaviour in both areas fall noticeably and also experienced a far more positive engagement between young people, the police and the volunteers.

'I would strongly encourage anybody who has the time and ability to become involved as a CATS volunteer and experience the positive difference for themselves.'

Anyone interested in getting involved in this local group, should send an 'expression of interest' letter to Karen Gold, CATS secretary, Callington Community College, Launceston Road, Callington, PL17 7DR by Monday, July 22.

Young people interested in finding out about projects and opportunities in the area should contact Michelle Roberts 01579 386120 at Callington Community College.
