A FANTASTIC £2,300 was raised during a successful ?auction of promises? in Tavistock last week, which is being put towards Tavistock College?s Operation Splash appeal.

The appeal is to refurbish the college?s swimming pool, which has been empty for a number of years.

Although the school has been granted £9,000 towards the project, an additional £15,000 needs to be raised to complete the work.

The auction of promises, organised by the year of 2000 parents? association and held at the Ordulph Arms, was the first fundraiser in the Operation Splash campaign.

Many excellent and unusual pledges were bid for, including a holiday in Spain, a tour of a nuclear submarine and a house-clean by firemen in full uniform, in addition to tickets for many local attractions and sports.

On the same day, students paid to attend school in mufti, some of them in beachwear and swimsuits!

Other events planned include a make up and make over evening, organised by 2002 PTA on June 30, when beauty and health products will be on sale in the school?s main hall.

And a superb fundraising effort is being planned by one of the college?s Japanese teachers. Chambers Sensei is to run a marathon on July 2 on the college athletics track, starting at 10.45am ? a full 106 laps.

He is hoping to be sponsored a minimum of a penny a lap. Anyone in the community is welcome to sponsor him ? just contact the college.

It is hoped the school pool will be ready for use by September this year.
