HURDWICK Golf Club hastily responded to the English Golf Union?s request to hold a ?Golf Aid? pairs competition on Saturday January 22. The idea was that the maximum number of clubs possible held a similar competition on the same day and built a substantial amount of money to help the earthquake appeal. Unfortunately, the weather on Saturday was very uncharitable, with heavy driving rain creating conditions that would have resulted in cancellation of any routine event. Entry was inevitably limited by the weather but a number of hardy members defied the conditions. They also produced some very creditable scores, together with £185 to contribute towards the national appeal. The winners secured their premier place on back nine count back ? with Clive Edmunds and Tony Pearson edging out Sally Arscott and Peter Brookbank, both pairs notching up an excellent 40 points. Rodney Browne and Mike Ridley took third spot with 39 points. Three other competitions took place earlier in January at Hurdwick, all in very unfavourable weather. Either heavy rain or high winds made scoring difficult. Mike Ridley won the New Year?s Day Medal with a net 74. Clive Edmunds was second with 75 and Tony Pearson third with 77. Tony also shot the only ?two? of the day. The midweek Stableford was won by Jason Archer with a fine 40 points, followed by Tony Pearson and Tim Gale, both with 37 points. Ray Hurle and Phil Bryant shared the ?twos sweep?. The final stableford this month was won by Clive Edmunds on back nine over Neil Tamblin, both with 35 points. Rob Archer took third place with 34.
