THE scheme to establish a youth café in Tavistock's Pixon Lane is due to receive a cash boost from the town council.

The project, being pioneered by Tavistock Youth Council, has been backed enthusiastically by the borough and county councils and other organisations. The Youth Council's café steering group recently presented its business plan to town councillors who gave it a warm reception.

At last week's meeting of the council's finance committee, deputy mayor Cllr Jenny Metcalf proposed a grant of £1,000 should be given to the project.

'It's such a wonderful enterprise, I don't think we do enough for young people in this town,' she said.

Cllr Norma Woodcock, town mayor, said the council actually did a lot for Tavistock's youth.

'I think the principle of the donation from us is more important than the amount, what they need is for us to be behind them,' she said.

Cllr Peter Jones, chairman of the finance committee, said young people involved in this type of scheme were probably more likely to attract grants from the big funding bodies than other types of groups.

Cllr Jane Ramsey suggested £500 should be granted to the Youth Council, as a 'token gesture'.

But Cllr Ramsey's amendment fell and the committee agreed to grant the council £1,000.

Tavistock Youth Council is currently looking for portable cabin premises for the café, which will be sited behind the Youthwize offices in Pixon Lane. A large grant application has been submitted to Children in Need for the £236,000 project.
