aA £200,000 revamp of Tavistock?s main toilet block took a step closer last week, after town councillors agreed to stump up some of the cash.
The ageing Guildhall toilets, owned by West Devon Borough Council, need major work to bring them up to standard.
Borough deputy chief executive David Inman told the full town council meeting that his authority wanted to work in partnership with the town and was asking for a third of the cost of the revamp.
Mr Inman told the council the cash-strapped borough had no money to undertake the work in the next financial year ? but if the town could commit to the scheme, it would be more likely to be able to start the project the following year.
The councillors agreed that a high-standard, 24-hour town centre toilet facility was vital for residents and visitors, although some members felt other sites could be investigated, apart from the Guildhall.
Town mayor Cllr Norma Woodcock said the council had to be seen as ?active players? in the project.
And Cllr Mandy Govier said the borough council would need backing from the town, to enable it to push for the toilet project to be included in its capital budget for the following year.
The council agreed unanimously to work in partnership with the borough over the toilet project. Members also agreed to commit to a one-third/two-thirds financial partnership with West Devon, up to a total sum of £200,000.
