MORE than 150 young people will be carrying the torch for West Devon when they compete in the Devon Youth Games which take place on Sunday June 27 in Barnstaple.

Youngsters taking part are aged from eight to 15 and attend schools from across West Devon. The borough team will be taking part in all eight sports ? athletics, basketball, cricket, hockey, netball, tag rugby, tennis and aquathlon (swim/run).

Team manager Tammy Messenger, West Devon Borough Council?s Sports Development Officer, said: ?One of the most important things that comes from the Youth Games is that young people get the opportunity to try out different sports and that means we can really develop our work with them.?

The event has been running for six years with each of the ten local authorities in Devon taking it in turns to host the games.

The games will have a distinctly Olympic feel to them with both opening and closing ceremonies and medal presentations. There will also be trophies for the overall local authority winners and for fair play.
