FIREFIGHTERS in Tavistock are urging the public to be more considerate and observant when parking in the town.
In recent weeks there have been several incidents when the retained fire fighters have not been able get their cars out of parking spaces having received a call out, or on arrival they have been unable to access fire hydrants ? all because of careless parking by the general public.
Sub-officer Tim Smith said: ?As retained fire fighters we have notices in our car windscreens, but we are being increasingly hemmed in with no regard for us getting out.
?People are also parking over fire hydrants, the yellow plates in the road.
?The other day I could not get to a fire because I was blocked in.
?By the time I got the chap to move his car it was too late, the crew were on their way back. Although it was only a paper bank, it could have been something much worse.
?An incredible amount of people in Tavistock think the fire men who serve the town sit around playing cards, but that?s not the case.
?People need to be more observant ? please don?t hem us in, we need to get to the station quickly every time.?
