CALLINGTON-based choir Canticorum performed a successful concert last Saturday at the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Tavistock.

The event raised £160 towards church repairs and funds for the 19-strong mixed choir.

The concert had a varied programme which spanned the centuries, and was accompanied and conducted by its music director Jenny Coombe.

Three pieces were selected from the year 1953 as a tribute to the Diamond Jubilee. 'Thou Wilt Keep Him in Perfect Peace' by Samuel Sebastian Wesley was performed at the Coronation ceremony as well as 'I Believe' which was originally a hit for Frankie Laine in 1953, although later enjoyed chart success with The Drifters and Robson and Jerome, and 'Stranger in Paradise' from Kismet.

The audience enjoyed a medley of songs from Les Misérables and modern pieces by John Rutter, including 'For the Beauty of the Earth', Howard Goodall's 'Love Divine', 'Joyful, Joyful' from Sister Act 2 and Jenny Coombes' own arrangement of 'Skyfall' by Adele.

Members of the choir showed off their other talents when Gabrielle Lewis performed an organ solo, and spoken entertainment was provided by Jane Hamblyn, Elaine Rimron and Maggie Peacock.

The evening concluded with 'Londonderry Air' arranged by Bob Chilcott, and a Handel-esque version of the nursery rhyme 'Sing A Song Of Sixpence'.

Canticorum can be heard again at 7.30pm on Sunday (July 21) in Trevelmond, for the chapel anniversary concert.

The next performance in Tavistock will be at the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, on December 20 as a joint concert with St Neot-based choir Canoryon Lowen.
