TAVISTOCK'S involvement in the First World War is being commemorated this year with a display in the lobby of Tavistock Library.
The display has been mounted by local authors Alex Mettler and Gerry Woodcock, whose book 'We Will Remember Them: The Men of Tavistock Who Died in the First World War', published by the Tavistock and District Local History Society, reflects on the lives of those whose names appear on the war memorial in Bedford Square.
The display is in two parts — the first part of the display features a list of all the names on the memorial, with photos where available, and the other part of the display features prints of period images, with details where known.
Both Alex and Gerry would like to hear from anyone who may have pictures to go with the names on display, or can provide information on the pictures they already have.
If you have images of the period of your own that you are willing to share, the staff at the library would be delighted to add them to the display.
The display will be in the library lobby throughout the year, and ties in with the library's short story writing competition — final submission date is May 31 — with cash prizes for the best story (1,500 words or less) commemorating any aspect of the First World War.
Details can be found at the library counter, by telephoning 01822 612218 or by e-mailing [email protected]">[email protected]
