ROYAL Marines from 42 Commando, based at Bickleigh Barracks, will be running a Commando Challenge this month to raise funds for Brentor- based children's charity CHICKS. West Devon residents have been challenged by the marines to take part in the team building day, which takes place on Sunday, April 27 at the barracks — giving participants the opportunity to test their fitness against a team of marines. The day, which starts at 10.30am, is open to teams of five to eight people who must be over 18 years of age. During the event each team will rotate through various challenges from archery to fitness training, based on the US Marine physical training, laser shooting and the 'famous' climbing wall. The event is being sponsored by south west law firm Foot Anstey. CHICKS is 42 Commandos' chosen charity of the year and this is just one event they are hosting in order to raise funds for the children. Paul Wood, the physical training instructor (PTI) based at Bickleigh, said: 'We are really looking forward to the day and hope that lots of teams will enter to raise funds for these children. 'The commandos, who have recently returned from a training exercise in Norway, will be undertaking a heavy training routine before setting off to Afghanistan later in the year. 'This will be a great event for those with all levels of fitness and give people a real insight into what training we have to undertake daily.' The cost is only £15 per person to enter, which includes a lunch and a Commando Challenge t- shirt. Each team member will gain sponsorship for the charity.
