IT was a case of spots before the eyes at Tavistock College last week when pupils and staff took part in a 'loud tie' day for charity.

The idea came from college student Cory Jones who saw an item about raising money for the Bowel Cancer Campaign on television.

'All the students have to wear a tie at school anyway so it was something they could all take part in,' said Cory's mother, Christine Jones.

Student representative Jo Newton helped Cory get the idea off the ground and Sue Welsh at the college tracked down the campaign organisers who sent the school a fundraising pack.

Over £390 was raised by all those who dug out the brightest and most garish ties in the wardrobe, paying 50p for the privilege of astonishing friends and colleagues with their choice of neck-wear.

Winner of the loudest tie was Stephen Hamilton of year 7 who received a Baywatch tie and signed photo donated by Chris Tarrant.
