MEMBERS and supporters of a West Devon WI group will be undertaking a sponsored event with a difference later this month, as they try to raise funds and awareness of an international aid crisis.

The ladies and friends of the High Moorland WI will be well out of their comfort zone when they camp out overnight in one of Britain's highest villages — Princetown.

Those taking part in the camp, on Princetown's village green, will be sleeping in a ShelterBox tent, to help raise awareness of the plight of the destitute people of Syria and funds for the ShelterBox Syria appeal.

WI president Wendy Stones said: 'We did a camp out once before, to raise money after the Japanese Tsunami and it was fantastic, lots of people came and supported us, brought food out to us and it really brought the village together, it was great.

'It's open to anyone, so hopefully we will get other people from the village and some of the young people on board as well to bring their tents and join in.'

WI member Sue Hammett said: 'We will be sleeping in the same sort of tents that will hopefully be winging their way to Syria.

'We have contacted other WI groups in the area and hopefully, being on a weekend in half term, there will be plenty of visitors and interest in what we are doing.

'We should be pretty obvious in the Shelterbox tent, and we will have collecting buckets and our banner up.

'I don't think we will be getting much sleep at all that night though!'

Princetown is not generally known for its dry and balmy climate, particularly at the beginning of winter, so the campers are keeping their collective fingers crossed that the weather is kind for the challenge, which takes place between 10am on Saturday, October 26 and 10am on Sunday, October 27.

Anyone who would like to know more or who is interested in taking part in the camp out should call Sue Hammett on 01822 880395.
