BERE Alston carnival cabaret night was a lively success, with local residents and groups providing a wealth of varied entertainment. Held in the parish hall on Saturday, the event brought carnival week to a close. Tubes band from Tavistock opened the evening and were introduced by master of ceremonies Phil Archer. Soloists included Gill Wyatt and Simon Prout with songs from the shows. Line Dancing was an innovation this year, and Tom Chapple and chorus entertained with more songs from the shows. Smooth Touch presented classics by Hogey Carmichael and Porgy and Bess, while the Bere Ferrers WI sparked laughter with their amusing interpretation of 'I'm just a girl who can't say no' — a song and dance act complete with babes in arms. Bere Alston Theatre Group gave a lively presentation of The Wizard of Oz. Richard Brindley, who played the Scarecrow, was congratulated on being accepted into the National Youth Theatre. A witty sketch was acted by The Good, the Bad and the Ridiculous. Jessica Barrowman, 13, who had been awarded a special achievement award by the carnival committee, helped the master of ceremonies draw the raffle prizes. The whole audience joined in the finale, 'Thank you for the Music.' The carnival committee was thanked for its work throughout the year, together with carnival queen Lara Costello and attendants Georgina Hiles and Gemma Gale. Gill Wyatt, who masterminded the production, was presented with a bouquet. Accompanist was Lesley Wright and other backstage helpers were Ann Wheeler, Geoff Wyatt, Steve Jackson, Adam Smith, Tom Chapple and Lesley Colville.
