CALSTOCK Rowing Club had a very successful and enjoyable weekend at the Isles of Scilly Cornish Gig Championships. They entered two crews in each category in their boats, Zeus and Cream of Cornwall.
After some hard training and fitness work over the winter it was tremendous to see the improvements made by every crew. Both the ladies A crew and the men's veteran A crew improved by 12 places from last year.
The greatest achievement was made by men's A crew who came in a superb 31st out of more than 130 boats and finished in Group C. Most of the crew had never rowed this time last year and they have only rowed together since last summer so it was an incredible result for this young team.
Praise also to the coxes, Gemma Turner, Dave Clarke, Ryan Moon and Jeremy Lawrence. Gemma, Dave and Ryan have never coxed previously in the Scillies and they all did a fantastic job of getting the boats to the finish with no major clashes.
Rita Hoile, on behalf of Calstock Rowing Club said:?'The club is now looking forward to the rest of the season. Junior training has started on Thursday late afternoon/early evening from age 11 upwards.
'There is a fun day planned for the Sunday, May 22 at Cotehele with some intra-club races and a barbeque and a chance for the public to try their hand at gig rowing. They will be holding their first ever gig regatta on August 7, again at Cotehele, and would welcome spectators and supporters to cheer them along.
