REMEMBRANCE Day in Callington will be very much a community commemoration on Sunday, despite restrictions on the number able to come to the service at St Mary’s Church.

To comply with covid restrictions set by the Church of England, the number of people who can attend the service is being restricted to 100 people, which includes wreath and standard bearers, cubs and scouts and the portreeve and deputy portreeve. However, everyone can admire the fabulous poppy wave, crafted from hundreds of crocheted and knitted poppies by members of the Poppy Volunteer Group, which is floodlit outside the church. New for this year, the volunteers have made poppy and ivy leaf panels decorating the war memorial in St Mary’s Square, where wreaths will be laid on Sunday.

The poppy wave was put up by Callington firefighters, who attached the poppy wave to the top of the church tower at the start of November, to cheers by everyone present. The firefighters said they were honoured to put up this hand-crafted tribute to those who fought for the town.

As well as repairing the poppy wave and making poppy and ivy leaf panels to go around the railings of the church, the Poppy Volunteer Group have also draped a poppy panel outside the new toilet block on New Road
