CALLINGTON and district Twinning Association petanque teams stormed to both county titles at the annual Cornish open championships at Boscowen Parc, Truro on Sunday. Whilst the A team of Peter Yarnall, Keith Shaw and Hilary Yarnall only lost one match on their way to lifting the Ginsters Plate trophy, their B team counterparts went through the whole tournament undefeated before whitewashing Saltash 13-0 to lift the main shield, and in so doing, record the club?s fifth title. The players ? Rick Lumley, Andrew Long and Sue Lumley ? won their pool matches against Saltash, St Germans and Truro before beating Falmouth in the quarter finals, and Torpoint in the semi-finals to set up the final showdown with local rivals Essa. Speaking after the event, chair of the association, Sue Lumley was delighted with the performance. ?It was so good to see both teams come away with trophy success,? she said. ?We cannot wait till next year when we hope to have an even stronger showing to defend our titles,º she added. The event, now in its 19th year, is a regular calendar event for the many twinning associations across Cornwall who have both Breton, German and Italian twin towns.
