Amity Cornwall women's league division two
Wendron Ladies 1
Callington Town Ladies 7
DESPITE the final score, this was a game in which Callington struggled to find their shooting boots early on in the game.
With the wind behind them in the first half Callington dominated possession but failed to beat Wendron's spirited goalkeeper, who twice tipped goal bound efforts onto the crossbar.
Callington's front line and midfield players rained efforts on the home side's goal during an awkward first half, yet some brave blocks from Wendron's defenders and goalkeeper kept them on level terms for more than half an hour.
Callington's breakthrough came when striker Sam May finished off a solo run with a low drive into the bottom corner. Despite more attacking play from Callington, Wendron succeeded in frustrating and stifling the away side's efforts to increase the score.
It wasn't until the second half when Callington played with the wind against them that the away side started to get the ball down and play. With captain and central defender, Marie Wilson moved into a more advanced central midfield role, Callington started to play more penetrating football. Some neat moves between Wilson and fellow central midfielder Katy Sheffield resulted in a number of clear openings for strikers May and Kate Lewis.
It was the speed and skill of the front two that eventually opened up the spirited Wendron backline. May went on to claim a further three goals and Kate Lewis also helped herself to a hat-trick, with the pick of the goals being Lewis' mazy run down the left wing before firing a shot home which hit the inside of the post on its way into the back of the net.
With five minutes left, however, Wendron got a deserved consolation goal following a rare attack on the away end. Despite the fact that the result never looked in any danger for Callington, credit has to go to the Wendron players who never gave up and played in the right spirit to the very end.
Camelford Ladies 0
Callington Town 5
CALLINGTON went into this game without influential defender Sian Jonas and quick winger Candy Caplin, but still proved to be too strong for Camelford.
With lots of early possession Callington made a bright start, with Sam May going close to opening the scoring and Katy Sheffield striking the outside the post.
The pressure soon told when midfielder Micha Carroll drove a 25 yard effort over the keeper and into the far corner. Katy Sheffield was next to get in on the act with a powerful low strike which squirmed under the keeper to make the score two nil at half time.
Camelford did rally in the second half and their most notable chances came when their striker twice went through one-on-one with Callington goalkeeper Sara Rowe, who bravely slid out to clear the danger.
However, it wasn't long before Callington increased their lead, with Sam May weaving past three Camelford defenders on the edge of the box to calmly slot home from 12 yards. Fellow strike partner Katy Sheffield scored two further goals in quick succession to complete her hat-trick and end the game as a contest. Callington just missed out on a sixth when Jude Besweatherick's effort from close range hit the crossbar.
Callington manager Adam McPherson was delighted with his side's performance. He said: 'Obviously I am delighted with the win but I was also pleased with the way in which we played. Considering the long break we have had, I could not fault their commitment, fitness levels and confidence.
'I just hope we can build on this now and have a decent run towards the end of the season.'
